Many people wonder what the difference is between Botox and Dysport. The nurses at Syner-Chi Day Spa have found more similarities than differences. They are both a Botulinum toxin A that results in a localized reduction of muscle activity. They both temporarily prevent contraction of the muscles that cause frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. They both last up to 3-4 months, depending on the individual, it may last longer. They both contain the same active ingredients but they are put together differently.
One of the major differences is in the cost per unit plus the dosage used. We usually use a 2:1 ratio for Dysport but it cost $3.50 a unit, where as Botox cost $9.00 a unit. For example, to treat the area between the eyebrows averagely takes 20 units for Botox and would come up to cost of $180. Using Dysport, we would use 40 units and the cost would come up to $140.
Another difference would be the brand name. Dysport is manufactured by Medecis Aesthetics, the same people who manufacture Restylane and Perlane. Botox is manufactured by Allergan, the same people who manufacture Juvederm and Latisse.
By the feedback we get from clients, Dysport has been reported to kick in faster, approximately 1-3 days while Botox can take up to 5-7 days. Some clients who have used Botox for years have found Dysport to be more effective because they have acquired anti-bodies to the Botox solution and it wears off faster. For the most part, Dysport serves as an alternative to Botox, when Botox becomes less effective to certain clients.
The preference of either Botox or Dysport depends on the individuals’ needs. Some clients prefer Botox over Dysport because they have been using it for years and feel comfortable with its results. Some clients switch to Dysport for the same reason, because they have been using Botox for years and found that their bodies break it down faster. The difference is basically similar to the difference between Advil and Aleve. They both do the same job but have different backgrounds.
